With the mandatory implementation of e-passes for visitors at tourist destinations in Tamil Nadu, Munnar has seen a significant increase in tourist traffic. This has brought a major boost to the tourism sector. E-passes are required for visitors to major tourist destinations like Ooty and Kodaikanal. As many were unable to obtain the e-pass, they have turned to Munnar, resulting in a severe traffic jam. Additionally, resort rooms are fully booked, highlighting the need for better facilities in Munnar. There is a call for a comprehensive master plan to address the situation.
Hours Stuck on the Road
Previously, areas like Mattupetty and Rajamala experienced the most traffic congestion. However, now all tourist spots in the region are facing severe traffic issues. On busy days, it can take over four hours to travel just 10 kilometers on routes such as Anachal-Munnar and Munnar-Mattupetty. Rajamala is also experiencing heavy traffic congestion.
Bus Stand Amid Inconveniences
Despite being a major tourist destination, Munnar still lacks a proper bus stand. Currently, the bus stand operates in the limited space within the taxi stand area. Both private and KSRTC buses stop here, leading to frequent arguments and traffic jams due to inadequate parking facilities. Although a proper bus stand has been a long-standing demand, no action has been taken yet.
Even with thousands of tourists arriving daily, there are insufficient facilities for parking vehicles in the town. The only available parking is provided by the KDHP Company on Mattupetty Road, where vehicles can be parked for free for up to two hours. However, many do not use this facility, preferring to park haphazardly along the roadsides, causing further congestion. There have even been incidents of tourists assaulting police officers who requested them to move their parked vehicles.
Narrow Roads a Major Issue
The main cause of traffic congestion in areas like Anachal and Rajamala is the narrow roads. Thousands of tourists arrive daily at Anachal, the gateway to Munnar. The roads, built many years ago, are now accommodating ten times more vehicles than they were designed for.
Need for More Facilities and Restrooms
With the influx of tourists, resort rooms often become unavailable. Despite many private resorts operating, government facilities are very limited. The PWD Rest House, KSRTC’s bus accommodation, and the Yatri Nivas in Devikulam are among the few available options. Although a building was constructed for a KTDC budget hotel in Idukki, it is yet to start operations.
Visitors arriving in Munnar in the morning and leaving in the evening face a lack of fresh-up facilities in the town. The existing restrooms are often in unhygienic conditions. There is also limited clock room space for storing travelers’ luggage.
