Peechi Dam is a famous picnic spot in Thrissur which fascinates travelers with its enchanting nature. Built over the gorgeous Manali River, this dam is spread over an area of 3200 acres of land. One of the highlights of this dam is that it is the major water system venture of Thrissur district. The dam was built in 1957 and at that time, it could irrigate up to 17555 Ha of land. It covers areas like Thrissur, Mukundapuram, Chavakkad Taluk and Thalappally. Today, Peechi Dam is the main supplier of drinking water to the Thrissur Town.

History of Peechi Dam

Peechi Dam was designed by E Ikkanda Warrier, the first Prime Minister of the independent state of Kochi during that period. Peechi Dam project faced a lot of opposition in the initial stages. Even the engineers in Kerala were against the construction of the dam. So, the prime minister brought a retired chief engineer from Andhra Pradesh and he could complete it in 1957. The project of Peechi Dam was a huge success and it became the chief water source for the people mainly in the Thrissur district. It helped the region in many ways.

Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary
