Earlier the places in and near Maradu were cursed with untouchability. The lower castes had to suffer a lot during those ages. The majority of the land was in the hands of upper castes. They treated the lower castes very badly. To free oneself from the atrociousness of untouchability many of the people of lower caste get converted into Christianity. They were not allowed to study in the schools. About 90% of the land of Maradu was in the hands of a few landlords. As a result of modern reforms of the Kerala Government, untouchability was abolished. The social, cultural, and economic situation of the lower caste people was finally uplifted due to the reforms of the Kerala government after Independence.
A landmark of the city of Maradu is the Mangayil Government High School. The land for the school was given by the reputed Mangayil family of Maradu and hence the name. The Mangayil family was considered as the quasi chieftains of Maradu and they were conceded the power by the Cochin Royal family. They even maintained a jailhouse.
The main livelihood of people in the Maradu in the earlier days was paddy farming and prawn rearing. Now it has developed into a bustling city. A few people now take up the age-old occupation of farming.

Maradu is a region located in Ernakulam district in the Indian state of Kerala. It gained significant attention in 2019 due to a major issue related to the unauthorized construction of high-rise buildings in violation of environmental norms.
The Kerala Government and the Supreme Court of India ordered the demolition of four apartment complexes in Maradu, namely Alfa Serene, H2O Holy Faith, Jain Coral Cove, and Golden Kayaloram, after they were found to have been constructed illegally in a notified CRZ (Coastal Regulation Zone) area. The demolitions took place in January 2020.
The issue of illegal construction and subsequent demolitions had far-reaching consequences, affecting thousands of residents and raising concerns about environmental regulations and building laws in the region.
Maradu has been famous since ancient times as a temple village of the royalties of Cochin State which had Thripunithura as their capital. Today Maradu is the most important geographical hotspot in Kochi where two national highways meet and a 30 Km long seaport airport highway deviates to the North along the CEPZ and the Info-park. Its proximity to many landmarks in Kochi and suburban places also makes its location important as a launch pad for brands and corporates expanding in Kochi.
