W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island Hotel earlier is designed by Hani Rashid and Lise Anne Couture of the world renowned Asymptotic Architecture, New York. The hotel consists of two twelve storied towers, one built within the race circuit and other built over the marina. The towers are linked together by a steel and glass bridge which crosses the F1 circuit. The main attraction of the W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island Hotel is the iconic structure known as the grid shell, a curvilinear glass and steel covering with a massive expanse of 219 m that veils the two towers of the hotel.
W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island Hotel was built by the Asymptote team to be a signature landmark of not only the Yas Island, but also of the Abu Dhabi and the whole of UAE. The grid shell has a unique lighting system that has video feeds that are transmitted to over more than five thousand diamond shaped glass panels. The lighting effect of the grid shell is simply awesome and it cannot be described in words. Just imagine the mesmerizing and the magical effect produced by thousands of lights reflecting against the blue sky, the turquoise sea and the golden colored desert landscape. The grid shell is a covering that resembles the sky which is visible from miles away.
