Sand Boarding in Abu Dhabi – How interesting it is?
Sandboarding also known as Sand Surfing is a type of board sport, something like snow boarding. The difference is that sandboarding takes place on sand dunes and snowboarding takes place on snow-clad slopes. The whole process involves sliding down, or across, a sand dune standing position with both feet strapped to a board. The daring ones opt to play with a board with no bindings, it is a more dangerous method.
Sandboarding has followers throughout the world, and obviously it a popular in desert regions like UAE and Dubai mainly because these are desert regions. Due to technical problems and considering the cost of building a mechanized lift on sand dunes most borders have only the option to walk to the top of the dune after every run or hitch or take a ride on a dune buggy back to the top. All year round upside dunes are usually available in comparison to other snow sports.
Sandboarding Equipment
Sandboard base is made from formica or laminex because it has to be much harder than the materials used in a snowboard. Make sure to wax your sandboard before a run otherwise it will not glide well over the sand. It is good to use a paraffin base wax designed especially for sandboarding. There will be abrasions underside the board and it is normal. For terrain sandboards hardwood ply is used, while fibre glass, wood, plastic composite is used for others. In case of steeper dunes you can even use a standard snowboard.
A professional snowboarder and sand boarder Erik Johnson holds the Guinness World Record for Sandboarding with a speed of 51 mph. Some unofficial speeds of 60 mph have reportedly been clocked.
