Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the Trivandrum – Ponmudi road which is about 50 km north east of Trivandrum, Kerala, South India. It was established in 1938. The sanctuary sprawls over 53 sq.km. of thick dense forest and eucalyptus plantation,situated on the mesmerizing Western Ghats.
The Peppara dam that is on the smooth Karamana River, rolling hills, flowing rivulets, lush green forests all make this wild life sanctuary a fascinating attraction of the tourists and adventurers. Trekking is a favorite sport that is carried out here with enthusiasm and thrill. The specific position of the Peppara Wild life sanctuary makes it the best habitat for all types of species.
The Peppara wildlife sanctuary is been developing into the most sought out attraction for wild life lovers and bird watchers. It is also hailed as an ornithologist’s paradise with the presence of birds such as Malabar Grey Hornbill, White bellied Treepie, Small Sunbird,darter, little cormorant, pied kingfishers etc. There are about 233 types of birds in the Peppara Wild life sanctuary.
Southern hilltop tropical evergreen, West coast semi evergreen, Southern moist mixed deciduous are the variety of forests that can be seen in the Peppara Wild life sanctuary. The sanctuary is also noted for its thirteen tribal settlements.
The enchanting Peppara dam with its tranquil, serene and bewitching surroundings enhance the charm of Peppara Wildlife sanctuary. Measures have been adopted by the Kerala Tourism Department along with the State Forest Department and Kerala Water Authority to make the dam site more attractive and to provide more amenities for the entertainment and leisure activities of the tourists, recently.
