Kochi Water Metro Celebrates 1st Anniversary with 2 Million Passengers!

Today marks the inaugural anniversary of the Kochi Water Metro, heralding a pioneering era in aquatic transportation. Over the past year, an impressive 1.972 million passengers have availed themselves of this innovative mode of transit. Initially launched with two routes and nine vessels, the service has since expanded its reach, now encompassing the Kakkanad-Vyttila route, as well as serving terminals at Chittoor, Cheranalloor, Eloor, and Fort Kochi.

The latest addition to the Watermetro route, connecting High Court Junction to Fort Kochi, commenced on April 21st. This service proves highly convenient for both tourists and regular commuters, offering a hassle-free journey to Fort Kochi devoid of traffic congestion. A ticket from High Court Junction Terminal to Fort Kochi costs Rs 40.

Recently, the construction of the Fort Kochi Terminal was finalized, coinciding with the delivery of the 14th boat by Cochin Shipyard. Following the completion of trial runs and ticketing system checks, services will commence from the Fort Kochi terminal. Initially, operations are planned for the High Court Junction – Fort Kochi route, with service intervals ranging from 20 to 30 minutes.

Distinguished by its proximity to the sea and adjacent shipping channel, the Fort Kochi terminal boasts unique features not found in other terminals. Its pontoons, supported by six one-meter-diameter piles, are deeper and specially engineered to withstand waves, ensuring passenger safety. Moreover, the terminal’s interior preserves the heritage of Fort Kochi, seamlessly blending modern construction with historical significance.

Multilingual Directional Signs

As a popular tourist destination, this location boasts directional signs and notices in various languages. From Malayalam and Hindi to English, Spanish, German, and French, instructions and notifications cater to diverse visitors. The terminal underwent extensive renovation costing approximately two crore rupees. Additionally, Kochi Metro has refurbished the beach footpath, and road lights and high mast lights have been upgraded to enhance passenger safety.

Accessible Pricing for Everyday Commuters

Fares for the Kochi Water Metro start as low as Rs. 20 and go up to Rs. 40. Regular travelers can avail themselves of travel passes, reducing their fare to as little as Rs. 10 for their journey. Comparatively, a bus ride from South Chittoor to the High Court costs Rs. 18, but with the Kochi Water Metro pass, commuters can cover the same distance for just Rs. 10. Additionally, the construction of terminals at Kumbalam, Paliyamthuruth, Willington Island, Kadamakudy, and Mattancherry is progressing swiftly. The Water Metro operates from 7 am to 7 pm, ensuring convenient service hours for passengers.

Presently, the Kochi Water Metro boasts eight terminals in addition to Fort Kochi. These metro stations include Vyttila, High Court, Vypeen, Kakkanad, Bolgatty, South Chittoor, Cheranalloor, and Eloor. Simultaneously, initiatives are underway to enhance the connectivity for commuters traveling to and from water metro terminals. Furthermore, the Water Metro is exploring the possibility of organizing special trips for tourists, contingent upon the availability of additional boats.
