The Gymkhana Club, originally known as The Planter’s Club, was established in 1905 with a loan of Rs. 2500 from the Kanan Devan Hills Produce Co. Ltd. for the gentlemen planters of the High Range in Kerala. Initially situated on the present Golf Course with a modest pavilion, it hosted the first coolie gymkhana for the company workers. In 1909, the High Range Club was officially formed, complete with furniture and fixtures in 1910.
Being one of the first planter’s clubs to be electrified and constructed as a residential club, the High Range Club installed telephones in 1916. The Library, originally near the current Nursery, was constructed in 1916 but demolished in 1925 due to floods. The present nursery and Ladies’ Room were then established on the same site.
Affiliated with the Trivandrum Club in 1915, the High Range Club held its first Madhurai Meet in 1916, graced by Lord Pentland, the Governor of Madras. Despite extensive damage to the Golf Course, grounds, and Tennis Court in the 1924 floods, they were restored. The Amateur Concert and Dramatic Society was formed in 1925 but closed in 1930.
During the Indian Freedom Movement, an armory was built near the Club, later used as Club Staff Quarters and a cellar post-World War II. The High Range School of Madupatty rented the Armory until 1987 when it became accommodation for visitors.
The First Class Compartment of the Kundaly Valley Light Railway served as a Bar on the Gymkhana ground after the Railway ceased operation in 1932. The last coolie gymkhana occurred in 1940, attended by the Maharaja of Travancore. Threatened by construction in the Pullivasal Hydro Electric Scheme, the Club Grounds were fortunately saved.
Cottages, initially constructed in 1935 for Moylam & Co., were repurposed for visitors in 1941 and later renovated in 1979. The Skittle Alley, built in 1938-39, transitioned from a rarely-used bowling area to a space for lectures, a Games Room, and Recreation Centre (1940-44) before being closed for bowling and opened for squash in 1958. Rugby was played at the Club grounds between 1925 and 1972, while Billiards was opened to ladies in 1941.
The first “away” meet occurred in 1910 at Peermade, and the first Indian Club member was the Dewan of Travancore in 1934. In 1958, the first Indian joined the Club Committee. Diwali and Independence Day were first celebrated at the club in 1972, and the tradition of hanging a planter’s hat in the Men’s Lounge began with W. O. Milne after thirty years of continuous resident membership.
