Al Bastakiya is regarded as one of the oldest residential areas in Dubai; Al Bastakiya get its name from a region of Ira called Bastak, from where some people immigrated to this area. It is located along the Dubai Creek, consisting of narrow lanes and wind towers and Al Fahidi Fort and one of the oldest existing buildings in Dubai.
The peculiarity of Al Bastakiya is the presence of wide variety of old wind towers along the Dubai creek. The houses in this area are traditional model and have tall wind towers intended to cool the building during the pre-electricity era, which are separated by narrow lanes called sikkas.
Those looking for Dubai Museum will find it in the oldest building in Dubai (Fort Al Fahidi) which displays traditional life of Bedouins. At Bastakiya you will also find the first office building in Dubai, ‘Bait Al Wakeel’. Here you could see Majlis gallery, small hotels, Caligraphy house, and Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural understanding. In Saturday mornings, there is open air market (souq) with several artistic events happening, especially during the winter months.
