Regarding Agasthyarkootam Seasonal Trekking 2024, the Government has issued an order permitting visitor entry, contingent upon the conditions outlined below.

  • The Agasthyarkutam Seasonal Trek 2024 is scheduled to take place from January 24th to March 2nd.
  • Online registration for trekking in the year 2024 will commence on January 13, 2024, with a daily capacity of 70 participants.
  • The Wildlife Warden of Thiruvananthapuram may permit offline bookings for a maximum of 30 individuals per day, based on seat availability, including cancellations. Offline reservations must be made one day prior to the trekking date.
  • The trekking fee, which includes the Eco Development Charge but excludes meals, amounts to 2500/- (Rupees Two Thousand Five Hundred).
  • The maximum daily booking for the Agasthyarkootam trek, including canceled seats, should not exceed 100 people.
  • Children aged 14 to under 18 are not allowed to be accompanied by a parent or guardian during registration, whether with or without a permit.
  • Participants of the trek must undergo a medical fitness assessment within seven days, and the certificate must be presented prior to commencing the trek.
  • When registering online, participants are required to upload a photograph and a copy of a government-approved ID at the time of registration.
  • Ensure the availability of a first aid kit and secure personal accident insurance.

Who can participate in Agasthyarkoodam Seasonal Trekking 2024?

Due to the challenging and perilous nature of the trek, only individuals with significant physical endurance are eligible to trek to Agasthyarkoodam. Participants must be 14 years or older, and both men and women are welcome to apply.

Trekkers must arrive at the Vithura-Bonacaud forest picket station by 7 am for the trek, carrying their original photo ID card and the printed ticket. Visitors are required to submit a self-declaration with signatures. The Eco-Development committee will assign a guide to each group of ten members.

  • Participating in this trek is entirely at your own risk. The Kerala Forest/Wildlife Department/Eco Development Committee assumes no liability for any harm or damage to the life or property of any participant.
  • The use of plastic carry bags, bottles, utensils, foodstuffs, consumption of liquor, and cooking are strictly prohibited in the forest during the trek.

  • Situated at the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent, Agasthyamala unfolds as a captivating mountain range with its enchanting landscapes, verdant forests, and diverse flora and fauna. Embarking on a trek in Agasthyamala is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure that beckons every nature enthusiast. However, before you set out on this remarkable journey, here are essential considerations to bear in mind.
  • Physical Readiness: The Agasthyamala Trek presents a moderate to challenging level of difficulty, emphasizing the importance of preparing your body for the journey. Agasthyarkoodam Seasonal Trekking Schedule

The two-to-three-day trek commences at the Bonacaud forest office, situated approximately 60 km from Thiruvananthapuram. The Athirumala base camp is around 15 km from this starting point. The duration for completing this stretch varies based on your trekking pace, ranging from a few hours to an entire day. The subsequent section from Athirumala to the peak presents a more challenging terrain, involving an ascent of approximately 1000 meters.

Day 1: Bonacaud to Athirumala (Approximately 6 Hours)

Arrive at Bonacaud by 7 am, where you’ll need to have your passes verified and collect food coupons from the forest office. Embark on the trek to the Athirumala base camp by 8 am. Aim to reach the base camp by 2 pm. Take a break, enjoy lunch at the base camp using your food coupons. The camp’s canteen operates from 6:30 am to 8:30 pm.

Take the opportunity to explore the surrounding flora and fauna with a leisurely walk. Spend the night at the base camp, where you’ll be provided a mattress on a twin-sharing basis. Dinner is served at the base camp, and you can use your food coupons to redeem it.

Day 2: Trekking from Athirumala to the summit of Agasthyakoodam and returning (10 hours).

Commence the ascent at 6 a.m. to reach the peak by noon. Take time to explore and appreciate the scenic views. Ensure you have a packed lunch or snacks to sustain your energy levels. Begin the descent back to Athirumala, aiming to return before sunset. Conclude the day with dinner and an overnight stay at the base camp.

Day 3 – From Athirumala to Bonacaud, a journey lasting 4-5 hours.

Grab a meal at the base camp, then depart for Bonacaud by 8 am. Arrive at Bonacaud by 1 pm and catch the subsequent bus back to Thiruvananthapuram.

Access to the Agasthyarkoodam Peak and its surrounding areas is restricted by the Kerala Forests and Wildlife Department. A regulated and defined trek, managed by the Forest Department, is available only during specific trekking periods determined by the Government. Tickets can be reserved exclusively by registered applicants. The trekking team will commence their journey from Bonacaud Forest station at 8 am, aiming to reach the base camp at Athirumala, situated 16 km into the forest, by evening. The challenging 8 km ascent to Agasthyarkoodam will commence early the next morning, with travelers returning to the base station by afternoon. Those who prefer a slower pace can opt to stay at the base camp for an additional night before returning to Bonacaud. It is strictly prohibited for trekkers to bring or consume alcohol, or cigarettes, or engage in any type of cooking within the forest. Additionally, performing any form of pooja rituals is not allowed within the forest.

  • The cost for each individual ticket (excluding meals) is Rs. 2,500. A ticket can accommodate up to 5 names.
  • Individuals seeking to purchase admission tickets at Akshay Kendras must ensure they bring a photocopy of their ID card along with those of their team members. The online application for trekking necessitates the inclusion of the identity card number for each participant.
  • As the trekking route traverses challenging and rugged forest terrain, participation is recommended only for individuals with excellent physical fitness. Those under the age of 14 are ineligible for the trek, and there is no special consideration for women.
  • Trekking is permitted for individuals aged 18 and above, provided they present a medical fitness certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner within 7 days of making a booking.
  • Trekking is permitted for individuals aged 14 to 18 years who have a valid medical fitness certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner within the last 7 days, along with a completed parental consent form.
  • The ticket, accompanied by a valid photo ID and a medical fitness certificate, must be presented at the Bonakkad Forest Picket Station between 7 am and 9 am on the day of the trek. All individuals listed on the ticket are required to sign the attached affidavit. For every group of 20 members, an engaged guide is provided through the Eco Development Committee’s services.
  • Trekking participants are required to provide a medical fitness certificate obtained within seven days prior to the commencement of the trek.
  • Due to its significant ecological value and inclusion in the UNESCO heritage list, Agastyarkutam imposes strict regulations on trekking activities. The carrying of pooja materials, plastic, alcohol, and other intoxicants is strictly prohibited. Smoking and cooking are also not permitted within the forest. Violations of these prohibitions will result in fines.
  • Due to its significant ecological value and inclusion in the UNESCO heritage list, Agastyarkutam imposes strict regulations on trekking activities.
