Nileshwaram or Nileshwar or Neeleswaram is a municipality and a major town in Kasaragod District state of Kerala
Nileshwaram is famous as heritage town and is called as the ‘Cultural capital of Kasargod’. Nileshwaram lies between Nileshwar and Tejaswini rivers, and Arabian Sea is in the west. It is the home of Nileshwar Rajas and is famous for its colorful folk arts, unique temple festivals, palace and sacred groves.
Nileshwaram is located on the southern tip of Kasargod and is associated with Lord Shiva. The meaning of the name Nileshwaram is Blue-necked God, and is considered the territory of the Lord.
The famous sculptor Kanayi Kunjihiraman hails from Nileshwaram. This beautiful place is dotted with backwaters, rivers, islands, hills and the beaches which turn it into an attractive place for tourism activities.
Residence of Rajas
Nileshwar Raja’s official residence was known as Nileshwar Palace. They were from the Kolathiri family and were rulers of this land once. Now the palace acts as a folklore centre and comes under the department of archaeology who conducts research projects. Visitors can get knowledge of the heritage of the royals. The other major attractions are the Thekkekovilakam and gingantic pond.
Abode of Sacred Groves & Temples
Sacred Groves called Kavu in Malayalam are miniature forests adjoining the small temples. These groves consists of rare species of flora, fauna and avifauna and it provides a vast array of plants especially medicinal plants, orchids, climbers, creepers etc. There are lots of such temples and groves associated with it in and around Nileshwaram town.
Some of the important festivals in Nileshwaram are Pooram and Kalasam held at Mannampurathukavu and the festival in Thaliyil temple. Porattu of Anjoottambalamveerarkavu attracts immense crowds and here you can experience the satirical representation of everyday life presented in pageantry during the Pooram. The Theyyam festival performed at sacred groves, tharavads and other sacred buildings, starts during the month of Thulam and it attracts lots of tourists. Nileshwaram is abundantly blessed with nature based tourist destinations.
Thaikadappuram Beach
Thaikadappuram beach is an attractive serene beach with a natural beauty of its own. It is the merging point of river Thejaswini and Arabian Sea and has virgin sand beach. The coconut trees surrounding it gives shade from the scorching heat. Another major attraction is the longest footbridge of the state. It is built across Tejaswiniriver during year 2000, and is having a total span of 400 meters and joins Nileshwaram with the adjoining Cheruvathur.
