Ramakkalmedu

Ramakkalmedu is a beautiful hill station in the Idukki district in Kerala which is around 40 kilometers away from Thekkady famous for its wind mills. A statue of the Kuravan and Kurathi erected on the top of the hill is the main attraction of this tourist destination.  Another interesting feature of Ramakkalmedu is that you can enjoy eye catching views of a few towns and villages in Tamil Nadu such as Cumbum, Kombe, Theni and Thevaram from this hill. Travelers can also watch the nearby wind farm from Ramakkalmedu.

Ramakkalmedu – A unique name

Situated at an altitude of about 3500 ft above sea level, Ramakkalmedu is a must-visit tourist destination in Idukki district. The meaning of Ramakkalmedu is the ‘Land of Rama’. It is believed that the place got its name because Lord Rama kept his feet in this land when he is in search of Sita, his beloved wife.

A place with wind all around

When you reach the top of Ramakkalmedu, you will find that wind is all around. In fact, it is truly a land of wind where you will find it difficult to stand against wind. Irrespective of the time and season, wind blows at high speed in this hill station throughout the year. The wind that blows in this area is at a speed of around 35 km/hr.  Due to this high wind energy, Ramakkalmedu got second place for the wind energy farm in Kerala with a capacity of around 12.5 MW. It must be exciting to watch the huge wind mills from the top Ramakkalmedu hills.

Easy to reach

Ramakkalmedu is located in the Thekkady-Munnar road in Karunapuram panchayath which is nearly 15 kilometers east to Nedumkandam. Apart from a scenic hill station, it is also a well known border tourism destination.

How to reach

Ramakkalmedu is approximately 40 kilometers from Thekkady and nearly 36 kilometers north to Kumily. The nearest airport is Kochi/Cochin International airport which is around 129 kilometers away. Madurai Airport is about 145 kilometers from this hill station. Changanassery is the nearest railway station which is approximately 90 kilometers from Ramakkalmedu.
