Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary

Detailed Information

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, is a popular wildlife reserve located in the Wayanad district of Kerala, India. It is an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Spanning an area of around 345 square kilometers, Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna. The sanctuary is known for its lush green forests, hilly terrain, and rich biodiversity. It is primarily composed of tropical moist deciduous, semi-evergreen, and evergreen forests.

The wildlife sanctuary is home to several species of animals, including elephants, tigers, leopards, sloth bears, Indian bison (gaur), sambar deer, spotted deer, wild boar, and various species of monkeys. It is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 200 species of birds, including peafowls, woodpeckers, babblers, owls, and eagles.

To explore the sanctuary, visitors can go on wildlife safaris conducted by the Forest Department. These safaris usually take the form of jeep or van rides, where visitors have the opportunity to spot wildlife in their natural habitat. The sanctuary also offers opportunities for nature walks, trekking, and birdwatching.

It’s important to note that the timings and regulations for visiting the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary may have changed since my last knowledge update in September 2021. It’s recommended to check with the official website or contact the Forest Department for the most up-to-date information regarding timings, entry fees, and any other guidelines for visitors.
