Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary

Detailed Information

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area located in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, India. Established in 1983, it covers an area of approximately 53 square kilometers and is situated on the Western Ghats, a mountain range known for its rich biodiversity.

The sanctuary is named after the Peppara Dam, which was constructed across the Karamana River to supply water to the city of Thiruvananthapuram. The reservoir created by the dam is an essential water source for the region and also adds to the scenic beauty of the sanctuary.

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is characterized by its diverse flora and fauna, with evergreen and semi-evergreen forests dominating the landscape. It is home to a variety of wildlife species, including elephants, tigers, leopards, sambar deer, barking deer, wild boars, bonnet macaques, and langurs, among others. Additionally, the sanctuary harbors a wide array of bird species, making it a favorable destination for birdwatching enthusiasts.

Visitors to the sanctuary can engage in activities such as trekking, wildlife spotting, and birdwatching. However, it’s essential to follow the rules and guidelines set by the forest department to ensure minimal disturbance to the delicate ecosystem and its inhabitants.

As with any wildlife sanctuary, conservation efforts are crucial to preserving the natural habitat and protecting the wildlife species within. The Kerala Forest Department, along with various conservation organizations, works to safeguard the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary and raise awareness about its ecological importance.
