Detailed Information

The Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in the village of Aranmula in Kerala, India. It is dedicated to Lord Krishna, who is worshipped in the form of Parthasarathy, the charioteer of Arjuna in the epic Mahabharata.

The temple has great religious significance and is considered one of the 108 Divya Desams, which are the holy abodes of Lord Vishnu according to Vaishnavism. It is believed to have been built during the 8th century AD and is an important pilgrimage site for devotees of Lord Krishna.

The architecture of the Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple is typical of the Kerala style with a gopuram (tower) at the entrance and a rectangular sanctum sanctorum (garbhagriha) where the main deity resides. The temple complex also includes various other structures such as mandapams (halls) and a sacred tank called Pampa River.

One of the notable features of the temple is the annual boat race known as the “Aranmula Uthrattathi Vallamkali.” It takes place on the Pamba River, near the temple, during the festival of Onam (August-September). This boat race is a significant cultural event drawing thousands of spectators and participants from all over Kerala.

The temple is also renowned for its traditional rituals and festivals. The daily worship follows strict procedures, and devotees can participate in various offerings and prayers. The annual festival of Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple, known as “Arattu,” is celebrated in the Malayalam month of Meenam (March-April). During this festival, the deity is taken in a grand procession to the nearby river, where a ceremonial bath (Arattu) is performed.

The Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple is not only a religious center but also a place of cultural heritage. Its intricate architecture, religious practices, and the famous boat race make it a significant tourist attraction in Kerala. Visitors to the temple can experience the spiritual ambiance, explore the traditional rituals, and witness the rich cultural heritage of the region.
